Academic Credit

Course Numbers

Each course listed on this website has an eight-digit identification number, for example 01:830:101. The first two numbers identify the school or faculty within the university which offers the course. The next three numbers are the subject index, and the last three numbers refer to the course level. Course numbers 001 through 299 are lower level undergraduate courses and 300 through 499 are upper level undergraduate courses; course numbers 500 through 800 are graduate courses.

Credit Value of Courses

Credits awarded for the successful completion of each course are indicated in parentheses following the course title. The notation “(CR. BY ARR.)” indicates that the number of credits is determined by arrangement with the department offering the course.

Limitation of Credit—New Brunswick

Because of the intense nature of Summer Session courses, students may register for a limited number of courses not exceeding one credit per week in any week of the Summer Session. Students may carry no more than 6 credits in a 6-week session without special permission.

Non-credit Courses

The symbols E and N preceding course credit amounts indicate that no credit is earned toward the Rutgers degree and no grade is computed in the grade-point average.

Full-Time/Part-Time

For certification purposes, undergraduate and visiting students registered for six credits during the Summer Session are considered full time. Students taking fewer than six credits are part-time. For Rutgers graduate students 4.5 credits are considered full time and those taking fewer than 4.5 credits are considered part time.

Undergraduates Applying for Graduate Courses

Rutgers undergraduates who wish to register for graduate courses, which are numbered 500 and above, are required to complete a Graduate Course Permission Form. Complete the form, available at your dean’s office. You must obtain either the signature of the instructor for the course, or the signature of the graduate program director, along with the written approval of the Office of the Graduate Dean. Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or better and senior standing (90 credits or more).

Graduate Students in Undergraduate Courses

Matriculated Rutgers University graduate students who wish to receive graduate degree credit for a 300- or 400-level course must have prior approval of their academic adviser. A “credit hour prefix” of G must be used.

Official Audit

A student may audit a course by entering an N in the “credit hour prefix” column of the registration form. The student is expected to do all the work of the course except the final exam and is graded "S" or "U". The course and grade appear on the student’s transcript. Students opting for audit registration are required to pay the regular tuition and student fee.

This option may not be changed after the course has begun.

Transfer of Credit to Another Institution

Rutgers, The State University of NJ cannot be held responsible for the amount or kind of credit which will be granted by another institution for any course taken at Rutgers. Prior approval for transfer of credit is recommended.
