New Jersey State Aid
The State of New Jersey does not offer scholarship or grant assistance for summer courses.

Other Scholarships
Students who wish to use outside scholarships to attend Summer Session must obtain a letter from the funding agency stating that the financial grant is available for summer courses and indicate the names and address of the official to be billed.  Students must submit the requested letter with their term bill to the cashier.

Aid from the University

Two new scholarships, funded by the Rutgers Division of Continuing Studies, are now available.

  • High School Summer Scholars Scholarships

High School Summer Scholars Scholarships are available to high school sophomores and juniors with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and a letter of recommendation from their guidance counselors. These awards, which cover 30% of tuition for up to two summer courses taken at the New Brunswick campus, are administered by the New Brunswick Office of Summer and Winter Sessions. To apply for this scholarship, students should apply to register for Summer Session (application available online at summer.rutgers.edu/highschool), then ask their guidance counselors to send a letter of recommendation no later than June 12 to:

New Brunswick Office of Summer and Winter Sessions
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey
55 Commercial Avenue, Suite 120
New Brunswick, NJ  08901
Attn:  Student Services Coordinator

Rutgers University Summer Session Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need to matriculated Rutgers New Brunswick students. Students who have earned a minimum grade point average of 3.5 (based on at least 12 earned credits at Rutgers), and are financial aid eligible, may apply for these awards, valued at up to $500 for a 3- or 4-credit course. These awards help to defray the cost of tuition for Summer Session courses on the New Brunswick campus, and may not be transferred to other terms or campuses.

Eligible students will be invited by e-mail to apply for this funding during spring semester by the Office of Summer and Winter Sessions. Award notifications will be e-mailed by the Financial Aid Office.
Students must matriculate at Rutgers University in order to be eligible for the following three Federal programs.
  • Federal Pell Grants
Undergraduate students matriculating at any school of Rutgers University who have remaining Federal Pell Grant eligibility from the current academic year should contact their local Office of Financial Aid before May.
  • William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Programs
Undergraduate and graduate students matriculating at any school of Rutgers University and attending at least half time may borrow under the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program, if eligibility remains from the current grade level.  Students demonstrating financial need will be reviewed for Subsidized Stafford Loan eligibility; while all students, regardless of need, will be reviewed for Unsubsidized Stafford Loan eligibility.

 PLUS Loans

As an alternative source of funding.  PLUS Loans can also be used during the Summer Session.  The PLUS Loan enables parents with good credit histories to borrow to pay the education expenses of each child who is a dependent undergraduate student enrolled at least half time.  The PLUS Loan Application is available at the Office of Financial Aid.

 Federal Work Study Program (FWSP)

Undergraduate and graduate students matriculating at any college of Rutgers University who are interested in employment during the summer (either full or part-time) may apply whether or not they are attending a summer session.  Students must, however, be returning to the University for the fall semester.  In order to be considered, a FAFSA for the upcoming academic year must be completed by March 15.  In addition to the FAFSA, a summer Federal Work Study Program application must be completed and returned.  Both are available at the local Office of Financial Aid.  The amount of available funding will determine the number of participants and the start date of the program.

For consideration for these programs, a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the prior year must be completed at least 8 to 10 weeks before the start of the first summer session.  The FAFSA can be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  In addition to the FAFSA, a separtate institutional summer aid application is required.  The institutional application can be accessed online at http://studentaid.rutgers.edu beginning on April 1.  Before summer aid application can be processed, students must be pre-registered for summer classes.
